llms.txt examples from real sites
Each file below was fetched by us on 2026-10-15 at 07:00 EDT. The excerpts are short and quoted for commentary; the copyright stays with each site. Raw copies are kept internally and are never published. (Excerpts are 5 lines or fewer and blank lines are removed; no logos or screenshots.) Files change, so the live versions may differ.
1. llmstxt.org: the minimal reference (637 bytes)

# llms.txt
> A proposal that those interested in providing LLM-friendly content add a /llms.txt file to their site. ...
## Docs
- [llms.txt proposal](https://llmstxt.org/index.md): The proposal for llms.txt
What to copy: H1, one-paragraph summary, one section, and links to .md versions with a short note after the colon. It's the whole format in a few lines.
2. FastHTML docs: a subpath file with instructions (4,796 bytes)
Source: https://fastht.ml/docs/llms.txt
It sits at /docs/, not the root, which is exactly the v2 "covers the pages under its path" pattern. After the summary it has a plain list of "Things to remember when writing FastHTML apps", e.g. "it is not compatible with FastAPI syntax".
What to copy: use the free-text area between the summary and the first H2 for the gotchas an agent would otherwise get wrong.
3. Stripe docs: instructions first (92,764 bytes)
Source: https://docs.stripe.com/llms.txt (served as text/markdown)
It opens with direct guidance to agents, e.g. "always check the npm registry for the latest version rather than relying on memorized version numbers", then a ## Docs list of .md links.
What to copy: if agents commonly make one mistake with your product, say so at the top.
Watch out: at about 93 KB it's large. The spec wants the file to stay "small enough to fit in context".
4. Anthropic developer docs: big, multilingual, no blockquote (85,476 bytes)
Source: https://docs.anthropic.com/llms.txt
It starts # Anthropic Developer Documentation followed by a plain paragraph rather than a > blockquote, and it lists available languages with page counts.
Lesson: under v2 only the H1 is required, so this is valid. A blockquote summary is still the spec's recommended second element, so checkers (ours included) will flag it as a suggestion, not an error.
5. A Shopify store: the platform default (5,720 bytes)
Source: https://www.allbirds.com/llms.txt
It begins # Agent Instructions — Allbirds and describes shopping via a "Shop skill" and UCP. Its content almost matches the store's /agents.md (5,677 bytes), which fits Shopify's docs: /llms.txt mirrors /agents.md by default (shopify.dev). We can't tell from outside whether the store customised it.
Lesson: on hosted platforms you may already have a file you didn't write. Check it before you add another (see /llms-txt-shopify).

Patterns across real files
- In all five, every Markdown link uses an absolute https URL (we counted on the fetched copies).
- Docs sites link to
.mdversions, as the spec recommends. - Size varies from 637 B to 93 KB, and the spec gives no byte limit. Our checker's 1 MB cap is our own sanity limit, not a spec rule.
Try yours: paste it into the checker or build one with the generator.
